Course Description

Program Description This program is designed for individuals interested in pursuing a career in the engineering technology sector. This option provides the foundation necessary for success in college engineering technology programs such as architectural, biomedical, chemical, electronics, energy systems, environmental, mechanical and water quality. Students considering a skilled trade program would also benefit. This program offers an opportunity to develop and refine academic skills (for science, mathematics and communication) that are necessary for admission. This will ultimately provide foundational knowledge needed to ensure success in subsequent academic studies. Some General Arts and Science courses are also transferable to other post-secondary programs. Overall, students will be required to complete six (three-credit) courses per semester (12 courses in total). These include five core (or mandatory) courses including Communications (two), Computers (one), Advanced Math (one) and Preparing for Academic Success (one). In addition, seven non-core courses are also taken including Advanced Math (two), Physics (one), Biology (one) and Chemistry (one) and general education elective courses (two). While the course, Issues and Ethics in Science is highly recommended, general education elective courses can be drawn from a wide array of courses in social sciences and liberal arts. Graduates of the General Arts and Science program may qualify for admission to and/or advanced standing to pursue additional college or university studies. Please note: It is each student’s responsibility to ensure that the courses he or she is registered in are appropriate for the stated admission requirements for future program choices. Successful completion of the GASK certificate does not guarantee admission into another post-secondary program. Each educational institution determines its own admission requirements. If you plan to attend any other college or plan to continue your studies at a university, please ensure that courses taken meet that institution’s admission requirements. Individual academic planning assistance is offered by the student advisor and students are strongly encouraged to meet with their advisor before selecting their courses
